The Colossus of Rhodes

The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the ancient Wonders of the World, was an enormous bronze statue that straddled the entrance to the harbor at Rhodes. Though tall enough to allow ships to pass between its legs, almost no trace of this magnificent sight remains today. This piece is an imagination of the Colossus and the enormous effort that its construction must have required. First, the idea of the Colossus is heard softly but disappears, temporarily lost as perhaps the details of its construction are worked out. However, as the chaos of the construction continues, the Colossus slowly emerges for the listener before it is finally presented in a grand climax in the brass instruments, the closest musical approximation to bronze.
