Oil and Water

Oil and Water is a trio for trombone, euphonium, and vibraphone and – as the title suggests – explores the way sounds mix together, whether well or not at all. The similarity of the instruments (all metallic) is contrasted with the clash in their musical lines. All of the lines have been written together contrapuntally, but as the piece progresses, the musical elements become more and more out of sync. The vibraphone provides an anchor, but ultimately the instruments cannot agree on anything other than their central pitches.
