God is Our Refuge

God is Our Refuge is an anthem written in the modern Anglican choral tradition. A triumphant piece written for the rededication of the organ of Trinity Cathedral in Phoenix, Arizona, the anthem uses the entire Psalm 46 as its text.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

This piece requires a medium-sized choir with some professional singers. The organ part calls for a good-sized instrument that includes a chamade or an equivalent dramatic trumpet bank. The organ part is relatively simple, thus allowing an organist to direct the choir simultaneously while playing.

I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes

I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes is a choral anthem for unaccompanied choir. It uses the text from Psalm 121 but interprets it in a way that make it appropriate for church choir and concert choir alike. This is a text that is very personally moving for me, and I took pains to set it in a way that honors both its sacred heritage and its relevance for people of all faiths.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Appropriate for a semi-professional church choir or a talented high school or college chamber choir. The piece itself is very lyrical and easy to read part-by-part, but the sum of those parts – while ultimately tonal – rarely adds up to a triad or easy resolution.

If I Shall Ever Return Home: Seven Chinese Poems

If I Shall Ever Return Home or Seven Chinese Poems is a song cycle for tenor and piano. Using gorgeous English translations of classical Chinese poems, the cycle follows a journey that begins in the physical realm but over time moves to the metaphysical. Sumptuous and deep, this piece is not easy but is probably some of my best work.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Appropriate for a professional tenor with a good ear. This cycle – like anything worth doing – will require some effort on the part of pianist and especially singer, but the payoff will far exceed that work.

Mass for the New Jerusalem

Mass for the New Jerusalem is a choral mass that uses the new Catholic mass translation as its text. The piece is intended to be functional art music and has been designed with care to be long enough to stand on its own as a concert piece, yet short enough for use in a liturgical context. It purposefully has one foot in the church and the other in the concert hall.

Appropriate for a volunteer or community choir.

Missa Ecclesiae

Missa Ecclesiae is a choral mass that uses the standard Catholic mass – minus the Credo – as its text. Melodic fragments link the movements – Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus et Benedictus, and Agnus Dei – so that the mass works both as individual movements as well as a unified whole. The Kyrie in particular has caught on with several choirs as a stand-alone piece, and the mass as a whole has been programmed by churches for high holy day services.
