A Baptismal Lullaby is a gentle church anthem designed for use at any baptismal service, though it works as a choral piece in a concert setting as well. The text is Psalm 139:9-14. “If I fly with the wings of the dove and alight beyond the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand hold me fast…”
A Song for Peace is a short piece for choir and African djembe. Written in an African marching song style, the song is designed for a procession at the beginning of a concert program. A singer and drummer start the call, and the choir picks up the response, walking onto the stage and into place. Once onstage, the music shifts to a gentle, polyphonic hymn for peace. Texts in Tagalog and Swahili increase the sense of international fellowship.
Appropriate for choirs at almost all levels. One singer at least should be a strong soloist. The texts in Swahili and Tagalog are easily pronounced and eminently singable.
Alchemy is a concert piece for two percussionists, a study in different unpitched and pitched timbres, an ambient percussion piece that explodes in passages of fast and precise strikes.
And All for Your Love’s Sake is a choral anthem written for the Evensong or Compline service and was premiered by a talented high school choir singing Evensong at Washington National Cathedral. The text combines two beautiful evening prayers, “Guide us waking and guard us sleeping” and “Keep watch, dear Lord”.
At the Manger is a mystical setting of Mary’s lullaby to the infant Jesus. The text comes from W.H. Auden’s unset Christmas oratorio, For the Time Being… This setting follows the quiet introspection of the text, starting with a solo soprano line and expanding into an 8-part texture by the end as all of humanity shares in the Nativity.
This anthem is appropriate for a highly skilled choir with confident readers. The setting is SSAATTBB, so all voice parts should be at least steady on their own. As an unaccompanied, 8-part anthem, this piece is challenging but rewarding to any choir looking for a gentle, mystical setting for Advent or Christmas Eve.
Four Snares is a percussion quartet for four snare drums. Each snare drum is a different size and timbre, and the piece uses all parts of the drums and all types of hits to create an exciting rhythmic experience that explores the entire possible range of the snare drum. Exciting and challenging, this piece is always a favorite with audiences.
This piece is for four players on four different snare drums (piccolo, 4", 6", and an altered drum are recommended). It requires a tight ensemble between the four players but is appropriate for college level and beyond. This download includes a zip file that includes the score and four parts.
God is Our Refuge is an anthem written in the modern Anglican choral tradition. A triumphant piece written for the rededication of the organ of Trinity Cathedral in Phoenix, Arizona, the anthem uses the entire Psalm 46 as its text.
This piece requires a medium-sized choir with some professional singers. The organ part calls for a good-sized instrument that includes a chamade or an equivalent dramatic trumpet bank. The organ part is relatively simple, thus allowing an organist to direct the choir simultaneously while playing.
I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes is a choral anthem for unaccompanied choir. It uses the text from Psalm 121 but interprets it in a way that make it appropriate for church choir and concert choir alike. This is a text that is very personally moving for me, and I took pains to set it in a way that honors both its sacred heritage and its relevance for people of all faiths.
Appropriate for a semi-professional church choir or a talented high school or college chamber choir. The piece itself is very lyrical and easy to read part-by-part, but the sum of those parts - while ultimately tonal - rarely adds up to a triad or easy resolution.
If I Shall Ever Return Home or Seven Chinese Poems is a song cycle for tenor and piano. Using gorgeous English translations of classical Chinese poems, the cycle follows a journey that begins in the physical realm but over time moves to the metaphysical. Sumptuous and deep, this piece is not easy but is probably some of my best work.
Appropriate for a professional tenor with a good ear. This cycle - like anything worth doing - will require some effort on the part of pianist and especially singer, but the payoff will far exceed that work.
La rosa blanca is a short piece for unaccompanied choir using a poem by the Cuban poet Jose Marti. Following a simple ABA structure, the piece allows the beauty of the voices – especially a melodic Soprano line – to shine.
Missa Ecclesiae is a choral mass that uses the standard Catholic mass – minus the Credo – as its text. Melodic fragments link the movements – Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus et Benedictus, and Agnus Dei – so that the mass works both as individual movements as well as a unified whole. The Kyrie in particular has caught on with several choirs as a stand-alone piece, and the mass as a whole has been programmed by churches for high holy day services.
My Luve is a piece for men’s chorus (ATTBB) that uses the Robert Burns’ poem “O my luve is like a red, red rose” for its text. It is a gentle setting with rich harmonies and a lyrical sense to mimic the tunes of Scotland.
This piece is appropriate for a talented men's chorus with decent reading ability. The parts should be fairly well-balanced between the five parts, not neglecting the Alto line; no one part is the melody.
Oil and Water is a trio for trombone, euphonium, and vibraphone that explores the relationship between such similar-but-different instruments. The piece weaves together different – and increasingly differing – lines as the instruments push and pull to find common ground. The melodic and harmonic relationships grow more and more strained as the piece progresses, ultimately ending with the instruments unable to agree on anything other than a central pitch.
Appropriate for talented and independent players. Individual lines are relatively easy, but a confident player is required to stand firm against the contrasting lines in the other parts. The vibraphone part uses some improvisation.
Out of the Deep is a short anthem for men’s chorus. The piece and text are both Lenten in feel, though there is a definite ray of hope in the form of a small tenor solo. Close-written harmonies (but uncomplicated rhythm) make this a challenging but very rewarding piece for a dedicated men’s chorus.
Appropriate for a talented TTBB men's chorus with at least one strong reader in each section. There is a high B-flat in the climax for the Tenor I part and a Tenor I solo elsewhere, so several singers need to cover each part.
Phos Hilaron is a duet for violin and cello. A short, single-movement work, it takes a ninth-century plainchant as the subject of a mini-theme-and-variations. The “Phos Hilaron” (Greek for “Gracious Light”) was the evening call to prayer for the Vespers or Evensong services. In this piece, the theme is first stated entirely in the cello and then altered and passed back and forth between the two instruments. A quiet and meditative piece, Phos Hilaron attempts to capture the gentle call to evening prayer.
Appropriate for intermediate levels on cello and violin. There is a difficult harmonics passage in the violin, though this can be played at pitch instead if too difficult for the player.
String Quartet no. 1 is a single-movement work that is approximately 10 minutes long. Fast, rhythmic passages contrast with slow, pulsing gestures, challenging the rhythmic ensemble of the quartet throughout the work.
Appropriate for a string quartet with excellent experience in playing together and in playing "New Music" with an ear for its beauty. Occasional very high lines exist in the first violin part, and harmonics and glissandi appear in all parts.
This download comes in a zip file that includes the full score and four parts.
String Quartet no. 2 is my Mt. Everest piece. This is a very difficult – but eminently playable – quartet in four movements over about 20 minutes. It will challenge any quartet on all levels: ensemble, rhythm, timbre, and technique. It is currently unperformed…which is a shame. It was my doctoral dissertation, and I honestly feel this is my best work to date.
Appropriate for a very tightly knit quartet. This will take practice and coordination, but a great performance is waiting in this score. A MIDI realization is available on request.
This download comes in a zip file that contains the full score along with four parts.
The Gates of Horn and Ivory is a chamber music piece for violin, bass clarinet, and piano. It is a single-movement abstract work that draws from Greek myth for its inspiration. The lines of music are drawn from the idea of dreams passing through the gates that bar the land of Dreams.
This piece is appropriate for talented performers of violin and bass clarinet. Rhythmically, the piece is fairly free, but the range for each instrument falls into the more-advanced level of play. The piano part is more of an accompaniment part, although it must of course be played with sensitivity and confidence. This download is currently for score only. Players will find the full score useful for practice and performance. Parts may be requested by email, if desired.
Three Anthems is a collection of short anthems for mixed choirs: a piece for full choir, one for men’s choir, and one for women round out the set. These are my earliest, professional work as a composer, and I am proud to present them here as a set for a quick and easy introduction to my style as a choral composer. Though “young” pieces, all three employ the contrapuntal style that I have continued to refine in my work to this day.
Appropriate for semi-professional church choir or a talented high school or college chamber choir. Sopranos have some high notes, so a section that can support those is desirable.
Trade Winds is a single-movement piece for a large concert choir and a small African-themed percussion ensemble. The text is an original poem by acclaimed poet Lisa Pegram and is written in a “cleave” form that allows it to be read in several different ways. The cleave is ideal for a four-part choir, and the piece takes full advantage of the form. The text itself is a beautiful affirmation of the earth and the connections that bind all people together.
Appropriate for large chorus of at least 50+ singers. Five percussionists are called for playing on a variety of Western and non-Western percussion. The percussion parts themselves range from amateur to experienced.
This download comes on a zip file that contains three versions of the score (one full score, one optimized score, and one choral score) along with five percussion parts.
