My Luve

My Luve is a piece for men’s chorus (ATTBB) that uses the Robert Burns’ poem “O my luve is like a red, red rose” for its text. It is a gentle setting with rich harmonies and a lyrical sense to mimic the tunes of Scotland.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

This piece is appropriate for a talented men’s chorus with decent reading ability. The parts should be fairly well-balanced between the five parts, not neglecting the Alto line; no one part is the melody.

Oil and Water

Oil and Water is a trio for trombone, euphonium, and vibraphone that explores the relationship between such similar-but-different instruments. The piece weaves together different – and increasingly differing – lines as the instruments push and pull to find common ground. The melodic and harmonic relationships grow more and more strained as the piece progresses, ultimately ending with the instruments unable to agree on anything other than a central pitch.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Appropriate for talented and independent players. Individual lines are relatively easy, but a confident player is required to stand firm against the contrasting lines in the other parts. The vibraphone part uses some improvisation.

Out of the Deep

Out of the Deep is a short anthem for men’s chorus. The piece and text are both Lenten in feel, though there is a definite ray of hope in the form of a small tenor solo. Close-written harmonies (but uncomplicated rhythm) make this a challenging but very rewarding piece for a dedicated men’s chorus.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Appropriate for a talented TTBB men’s chorus with at least one strong reader in each section. There is a high B-flat in the climax for the Tenor I part and a Tenor I solo elsewhere, so several singers need to cover each part.

Phos Hilaron

Phos Hilaron is a duet for violin and cello. A short, single-movement work, it takes a ninth-century plainchant as the subject of a mini-theme-and-variations. The “Phos Hilaron” (Greek for “Gracious Light”) was the evening call to prayer for the Vespers or Evensong services. In this piece, the theme is first stated entirely in the cello and then altered and passed back and forth between the two instruments. A quiet and meditative piece, Phos Hilaron attempts to capture the gentle call to evening prayer.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Appropriate for intermediate levels on cello and violin. There is a difficult harmonics passage in the violin, though this can be played at pitch instead if too difficult for the player.

String Quartet no. 1

String Quartet no. 1 is a single-movement work that is approximately 10 minutes long. Fast, rhythmic passages contrast with slow, pulsing gestures, challenging the rhythmic ensemble of the quartet throughout the work.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Appropriate for a string quartet with excellent experience in playing together and in playing “New Music” with an ear for its beauty. Occasional very high lines exist in the first violin part, and harmonics and glissandi appear in all parts. This download comes in a zip file that includes the full score and four parts.

String Quartet no. 2

String Quartet no. 2 is my Mt. Everest piece. This is a very difficult – but eminently playable – quartet in four movements over about 20 minutes. It will challenge any quartet on all levels: ensemble, rhythm, timbre, and technique. It is currently unperformed…which is a shame. It was my doctoral dissertation, and I honestly feel this is my best work to date.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Appropriate for a very tightly knit quartet. This will take practice and coordination, but a great performance is waiting in this score. A MIDI realization is available on request. This download comes in a zip file that contains the full score along with four parts.
